Project Mi5 is expanding to Gran Canaria. We want to set up an Mi5 Innovation Lab on the island as the most southern station of the Mi5 network. Due to that, we, namely Jordi, Bernat and Jonas, went on tour to explore Gran Canaria for six days.
Even though we would have enjoyed lying on the beach all day, we had some tasks to fulfill in order to organize and prepare for the Mi5 Innovation Lab.
Although Gran Canaria is a rather small island, there are more than 25.000 students at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). One obvious goal was to get in touch with them in order to establish cooperation for the upcoming Mi5 innovation lab.
First of all, we contacted some of the professors from the university. Due to the involvement of Dr. Stetter and our Mi5 teammate Markus in the Eurocast Conference at Gran Canaria in 2015, it was very easy for us to get in contact with Professor Hernández from the computer science faculty. He was very welcoming and arranged a presentation of the Mi5 project for computer science students of this faculty. The students were interested not only in the project but also in the impact of software disciplines on classical engineering.
Professor Hernández also arranged for us a separate appointment in order to give us a tour of the campus facilities and showed us the robotics lab, where a lot of oceanic science robots are being developed.
The engineering faculty was more of a challenge, since we didn’t have any previous contacts there. We tried the direct way by visiting the faculty and asking our way through. We ended up talking to the director of the faculty, Prof. Angulo, and Prof. Martín, who is in charge of student internships and theses. They were very interested in the ideas and topics of the Mi5 project, so we presented the project in detail to them the next day.
The professors from both computer science and engineering faculty are willing to support the project by offering their local students the chance to participate in the Mi5 Innovation Lab. The students could then include their work into an internship, a thesis or any university-related project.
Regarding the workspace for the innovation lab, we decided to take a look at the Parque Cientifico Tecnológico, which is located on the Campus of the ULPGC. The building is completely new and we could be one of the first companies to move into the offices, where we will be able to work in an optimal environment for the Mi5 Innovation Lab.
