¿QUÉ ES UN MAKEATHON?

Hackathon + Making/Prototyping = Makeathon

What is a Makeathon?

Hackathon + Making/Prototyping = Makeathon

A makeathon is an Event, where young programmers and engineers stick together for a few days to be creative and develop new ideas and prototypes together. Especially the connection between the digital and the real world causes new interesting challenges because you build and construct physical prototypes and combine them with digital and web technology. Also is about passion for technology and having fun within a young and creative community.

Questions?

Can I attend only to the presentation?

Yes! In case you sadly cannot attend the event as a participant, we are happy to invite you to the final presentations on 30.09. – 14:00 @ Escuela Informatica

If I cannot attend every day, can I register for the Makeathon and be a part of a team?

Yes, you can take part in the Event without attending all the time. We don’t want you to skip university due to the Makeathon.
Within the registration form, you can tell us the days/times you can attend in the “I want to add something”-section.

I don't have any concrete idea about the proposed topic, can I take part?

Yes! During the first phase of the Makeathon, we will do some brainstorming to find ideas for your prototypes. If you don’t have any idea, we can help you there.

I am a first year student, can I participate?

Yes you can! 😉

Is it necessary to have a team for participating?

No, you don’t need a team. Most of the people register without a team. The first day we will create teams with the participiants, also regarding their availability during those days.

I speak very little English, can I register?

The Makeathon is an international Event, so most of the presentations will be in english language. To work in a team though, you will probably get along with some basic english, especially since you will have other spanish students to help you.

What background knowledge is necessary?

First of all: Motivation & Self-suficient work – if you have that, you can learn everything you need.
Apart from that, skills of all disciplines, such as MATLAB, CAD, C++/C#, Simulation, Construction or manual or soft skills, such as soldering and a good team work are useful.
Don’t be afraid of any lack of skills, we are doing this event to learn from each other.

Will I earn university credit or some certificate for participating? Will there be an attendance register of the enrolled students?

The Makeathon is a private and free time event in cooperacion with the university. Therefore there will be no attendance registration and we are not able to offer credits. If you like, we are happy to give you an attendance certificate, after attending the event.

I have subjects of different courses, which semester should I choose in the registration form?

Take the highest one.

Is it necessary to bring any device or hardware?

You should bring your laptop if possible. We will provide Materials, such as Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, robots, 3D Printer, Electric Car and many more. Apart from that, feel free to bring additional hardware if you have something special in mind, but it is not nececarry.

Who's organizing the Event?

We are a mixed student team from Germany and Spain in collaboration with multiple companies and unisversities – the Event is “from students – for students”.
If you have any questions left, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or write a short informal message to Jonas: jfischer@itq.de

Team Gran Canaria: First steps

The Mi5 Student Team Gran Canaria is on! As a result of our Robot workshop, some motivated students are continuing their work at our Lab in Las Palmas.

Mi5 Team Gran Canaria

We are currently working as an interdisciplinary team of 8 students.

Since both, the engineering and the informatics faculty, are cooperating with our project, some students are even able to have their work formaly accepted as a part of their studies.Faculty EIIC / ULPGCULPGC

PLC Electronics

First challenges were the electrical and electronical setup of our B&R delta robot, as well as the mechanical structure.

Lab_Panorama

Currently the team is working on several tasks:

  • setting up a Simulation Environment using Siemens NX for CAD Design and IndustrialPhysics / Machineering for the HIL SimulationNX and Simu
  • constructing and building a case for the electronical components of the B&R Delta Robot

Lab Setup

  • Implementing an Image Processing Module for detecting coloured pieces, using MATLAB/Simulink

MATLAB Image Recognition

  • PLC & CNC Programming, OPC UA Setup and movement limits of the B&R Delta Robot

    Robot

Despite the time in the university, we used the weekends for activities. Some Students of our Team and me went for a trip to ‘roque nublo’:

Mi5_Hiking_Trip

Also I managed to enhance my mobility and explore the island on two wheels:

Mobility

Lessons learned:

  • It is close to impossible to find standard aluminium profiles on the island, but you get to know a lot of nice people while looking for them.
  • Seeing a moving robot catches every students attention, no mather if you can talk to him or not.
  • If a policeman pulls you over and asks you, if there are ‘STOP’ signs existing in germany aswell, he is not interested in german traffic culture.

New virtual demonstrator

We are currently building a complete virtual demonstrator, that will use 5 x 24″ Multitouch panels in the back, each for one module, 2 x 34″ monitors in the bottom for the xts in real size (2 x 86cm diagonal), 3 IPCs for the simulation, 2 Laptops, 1 HMI Multitouch 24″ panel.

Thanks to B&R for the support for the Touch Panels and the IPCs.

We will keep you updated on our journey to the virtual industry-ready production facility.
